Our Commitment to Inclusivity
As a Reform Jewish community, we are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment for all individuals. Our values are rooted in the principles of equality, justice, and respect for the dignity of every person. Below, you will find information on our specific inclusivity policies regarding LGBTQIA+ individuals, gender egalitarianism, accessibility, Jews of Colour, diverse Jewish customs, and interfaith families.
2SLGBTQIA+
We believe that every person, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. Our community proudly welcomes 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and families. We celebrate and support the diversity of identities and experiences within our congregation. Our policies ensure that 2SLGBTQIA+ members can fully participate in all aspects of synagogue life, including religious services, leadership roles, and educational programs. We also provide clergical support for those navigating life events related to gender and sexuality. We hope to upgrade our current gender-neutral restroom to increase accessibility in the future.
Gender Egalitarianism
Our congregation is committed to gender egalitarianism, ensuring that all genders have equal opportunities to engage in and lead religious, educational, and community activities. We strive to create a space where everyone can express their gender identity freely and without judgment. From leadership roles to equal participation in rituals and ceremonies, we work to break down barriers and promote gender equality in all areas of synagogue life.
Interfaith Families
In alignment with the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), we warmly welcome interfaith families into our community. We believe that each family, regardless of its makeup, enriches our congregation with its unique perspectives and experiences. Interfaith families are encouraged to fully participate in all aspects of synagogue life, from attending services and educational programs to celebrating holidays and lifecycle events. Our clergy and staff provide support and guidance for all major lifecycle events, ensuring that each family member feels included and valued.
Accessibility
We believe that everyone should have access to full participation in our community, regardless of physical or cognitive abilities. We have updated our facilities to increase our accessibility, including an elevator and accessible restrooms. We are continually working to improve our physical and virtual spaces to accommodate the diverse needs of our members. Our educational and social programs are also designed to be inclusive, ensuring that everyone can participate and benefit from our community offerings.
Jews of Colour
Our community recognizes and celebrates the diversity within the Jewish people, including Jews of Colour. We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where all Jews, regardless of their racial or ethnic background, feel valued and respected. We strive to address and combat racism and bias within our community. Our educational programs and discussions often include topics related to race, identity, and inclusivity, aiming to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich tapestry of Jewish life.
Embracing Diverse Jewish Customs
We welcome and honour the rich diversity of Jewish customs and traditions from around the world. Whether you identify with Sephardic, Ashkenazic, Mizrahi, or any other Jewish cultural tradition, you are welcome at Temple Anshe Sholom. We celebrate the variety of customs, liturgies, and culinary traditions that each member brings and recognize how our differences enrich our collective experience and deepen our connections to one another and to our shared heritage.
We hope this page reflects our dedication to inclusivity and our ongoing efforts to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to reach out to our community leadership.
